Children’s Dentist in Wakefield and Leeds: How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Visit

A child’s first trip to the dentist often shapes how they feel about dental care for years to come. A positive experience early on means less anxiety later and healthier teeth for life. At Poldent Dental Care in Wakefield and Leeds, we welcome our youngest patients and speak with families in both English and Polish.

When should your child first see a dentist?

Ideally soon after the first tooth appears, and no later than around their first birthday. The first visit is short and relaxed: the dentist checks the teeth and gums, and parents get practical advice on brushing, feeding and dummy use. Your child gets used to the surgery before any treatment is ever needed.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about the visit calmly and positively. Avoid words like “pain”, “needle” or “don’t be scared”, which suggest there is something to fear.
  • Play dentist at home. Count a teddy’s teeth, then your child’s.
  • Pick a good time. A rested, fed child copes far better.
  • Keep your own worries to yourself. If you are a nervous patient, try not to show it in front of your child.

Baby teeth need treatment too

It is a common myth that baby teeth don’t matter because they fall out anyway. Untreated decay causes pain, can lead to infection and may damage the adult teeth developing underneath. Losing a baby tooth too early can also take away space for the adult tooth, which often means orthodontic treatment later.

Daily care at home

  • Brush your child’s teeth twice a day, always before bed.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste in an age-appropriate amount (a smear for toddlers, a pea-sized amount for older children).
  • Help with brushing until your child can do it thoroughly, usually up to the age of 7–8.
  • Limit sugary drinks and snacking between meals, and give only water in a bottle at night.
  • Keep up regular check-ups, usually every six months.
